ODPS Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles Driver License Suspension & Reinstatement

ODPS | BMV

Currently under a license suspension?

If you are currently under a license suspension by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), the information provided will assist you in learning what you need to do to restore your driving privileges. The BMV will make every effort to restore your driving privileges to you upon timely receipt of our reinstatement requirements. These requirements differ depending on what type of suspension you are under.

In order to allow for the timely return of your driving privileges and to eliminate unnecessary delays, we recommend that you mail your requirements approximately 20 days before your suspension ending date. This will allow the BMV to process your reinstatement requirements and restore full driving privileges to you when the suspension has ended, provided that your driver license has not expired and there are no other suspensions in effect at that time. DO NOT SEND CASH. Please send a check or money order, made payable to the "Ohio Treasurer, Kevin L. Boyce" to the appropriate address.

If there are BMV forms that need to be completed, the forms may be provided by your court, or downloaded from the BMV forms web page. Also, please remember that reinstatement fees are subject to change as a result of new legislation. To verify if fees are current, please call the BMV.

Fee Payment Plans

ORC Section 4510.10
You may contact the county or municipal court where you live for a fee payment plan. The plan will allow you to request limited driving privileges while making payments to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) on your reinstatement fees. The court is not required by Ohio law to grant a fee payment plan. The fee payment plan will require a minimum payment of $50 per month.

Discharge in Bankruptcy

ORC Section 4510.10(G)

Ohio law considers reinstatement fees as a debt that may be discharged in a bankruptcy. The BMV needs to be in receipt of a copy of the Petition or Discharge in Bankruptcy and a copy of the Schedule of Debts indicating the debts that were included in the bankruptcy. The BMV will review the documentation and remove the fees from your record that were included in the bankruptcy

Bankruptcy documentation may be filed in person at any Reinstatement Center location or may be mailed to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Attn: Financial Responsibility, P.O. Box 16583, Columbus, Ohio 43216-6583
